Conflict in Kayah

The past week, there have been several battles between the civilian defence force (Karenni People Defense Force - KPDF ) and the military in various villages in the state of Kayah. On May 22, the resistance attacked a security outpost and set it ablaze. On May 23 alone, at least 40 soldiers were killed. After fighting broke out in Moe Bye, the military proceeded to shell civilian houses. Resistance fighters managed to take over a police station; around 15 soldiers were killed(reports vary). 4 policemen/soldiers were also captured alive.

On the same day, there was fighting on the Loikaw-Demosoe highway which resulted in at least 24 soldiers being killed.

On May 24, the fighting near Loikaw Township was intensifying and the villagers of Kayan Thar Yar Village (IDPs) were hiding in a Catholic Church. The military shelled the church with artillery, killing 3 women and 1 man.
